The Porcelana Industrial Complex, a listed industrial heritage monument in Nea
Makri, is reborn as a Multifaceted Cultural Center. The historic 4000m² porcelain
factory – longtime abandoned since 1969 – is now turned into an Industrial Heritage
Museum, a versatile exhibition space, a theater, art studios, a library, commercial
shops, and dining and play areas. Within the complex, the 650m² two-story building,
which once housed the factory’s chemical lab and the entrepreneur’s residence, is now
hosting the Nea Makri Folklore Museum and administrative offices.
Lighting plays a pivotal role in preserving the essence and mystery of the complex’s
storied past, while serving the current uses. Emotive ambiances tailored to each space,
enhancing the visitor experience through specific atmospheres, while functional
adaptability ensures lighting serves practical purposes. Balancing functionality and
emotions is achieved by employing a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting,
creating a layered environment. Ensuring a smooth transition between natural and
artificial lighting involves sensors and smart controls that adjust based on natural light
levels.
Outdoor spaces include movable fixtures and pole-mounted floodlights for large
gatherings, with bollard lights and in-ground uplights creating a gentle ambiance.
Sports facilities and walking trails benefit from glare-free LED fixtures, for both
safety and aesthetics. The natural amphitheater and educational garden use low-level,
warm lighting for intimacy.
Smart controls manage the lighting system, optimizing energy usage and adapting to
different scenarios. Interactive elements, such as sensors, adjust lighting based on
movement and natural light levels, ensuring an efficient and responsive environment
throughout the Porcelana Industrial Complex.
